  • What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Students entering kindergarten must be five years old by September 1st.  The “Kindergarten Readiness Act” (Assembly Bill 1381) has established a class called “Transitional Kindergarten” (TK) for students who turn five between September 2nd and December 2nd for the current year.  In 2022-2023, TK will be for students who turn five between September 2nd and February 2nd.

  • Why have Transitional Kindergarten?

AB 1381 requires students to be older than in previous years to attend kindergarten and provides an additional year of kindergarten (TK) for some of our youngest students.  The TK class is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program.  Students completing the TK class will participate in kindergarten the following year.  Students with fall birthdays are often not developmentally ready and need more time to be successful in kindergarten.  The two-year kindergarten program gives these students “the gift of time” to develop the social, emotional, and academic skills necessary to build self-confidence and achieve success in school and in the future.

  • What is the TK Class program?

The TK class works with a mixture of preschool foundations and kindergarten standards.  Instruction will focus on language and literacy, math, and social emotional development through large and small group instruction, as well as hands-on activities.

  • Where are the TK Classes?

The TK Classes will be held at Ripon Elementary and Ripona Elementary, with a full day program from 8:15-2:00.

  • Can other students become part of the TK Class?

Students who turn five after February 2nd may be accepted into the TK Class as they turn five, if space is available.

  • How do I register my child?

2022-2023 Registration will be at Park View Elementary, March 8, 2022, from 4:00-7:00 pm. Please follow directions on the enrollment link above.  For general questions about transitional kindergarten, you may also contact Kathy Coleman (kcoleman@riponusd.net) (209) 599-2131, at the District Office.
